New to crossbows...a little help

Recommended Posts

Alright, I'm in the market for a cross bow for my daughter. She's 9, and just too small to handle a 20 gauge or muzzleloader yet, but she wants to hunt this season. In Illinois now crossbows are legal from the second Monday after Thanksgiving till the end of the season in January, so this gives her several weeks to hunt as opposed to just one weekend for youth season. I need something on the small side, lightweight, and cheap. Does anybody have any experience with the SA brand or the Barnett RC-150. The local Rural king carries the SA and has a recurve style for $150, and a compound for under $200. The Barnett has an adjustable stock, and is also around the $200 mark.

New to crossbows...a little help

Check out the new Parker Challenger. It's a little up in price but if your going to get a crossbow that will last go with Parker. Parker crossbows come with lifetime warranties and the new g2 bull pup trigger which allows the bow to not be dry fried. It shoots about 300 FPS and cost about $400 but if taken care of it will last forever. It's also available in a youth model I believe.

Thanks for the info everybody. It appears that Horton shut down, and now a lot of their equipment is on clearance at retailers. Natchez had the Horton Summit HD150 for $150, which is like half off the list price. Of course it doesn't come with a warranty, but seems like a better quality.

My 10 year old daughter shoots my full size Excalibur with no problems. I just made a rest for her with an old camera tripod and the girl hits the mark every time. She loves the crossbow.

Hey mud, I'm in the same boat. My daughter isn't for gun hunting but loves shooting the crossbow. I researched them heavily last year and ended up selecting a crossbow that both of us can use. Every 2-3 years the companies move to a new model and the old models go on sale. Great deals on Craigslist, and pawn shops. You'll pay too much on AT classifieds and online stores. The Horton you speak of is reviewed on AT. Looks like a 30 yard and in crossbow. TenPoint is the best in the business (my opinion of course). I went with the Stealth XLT - normally about 1200.00 with all the extras - on Craigslist I got it new in the box for 800.00. My daughter hits a tennis ball every time out to 50 yards with a tripod rest. If 150.00 was all I had I'd be calling pawn shops and I'd try to find a 4-5 year old TenPoint, Barnett, or Parker.

Yea, I noticed crossbows in the AT classifieds are like gold lol. I've been checking Craigslist, but the prices on there seem to be high too. Maybe I'll just sit tight and research a little more until a good deal comes along.

Just a little update in case anyone is interested....I just ordered one up today. I was going to wait, but came across this and it sounds perfect for my daughter. Recruit | Barnett Crossbows

It is a Barnett, but from my research it a great crossbow for the money, and has some good safety features. I ordered it from a place called Black Bear Sporting Goods for $250. I've never heard of the place, but they have some decent prices and hopefully they are decent to deal with.
