........... bounce bounce bang

Recommended Posts

Migraine this morning and a bad night of sleep kept me from going to the deer stand this morning like i had planned. About 7:45 on my way to get a refill in my coffee cup i happened to see 2 yotes out the kitchen window in our pasture and of course by the time i got a rifle and got back they were gone. So about 8 i am out the door with the new foxpro caller that cabelas points bought me.

Figured they were probably long gone by this time but worth a shot. I drop the speaker off about 70 yards out in front of me and start the caller running adult cottontail as i am climbing up the ladder. I was in the stand less than a minute when this yote comes flying out of brush down the hill to my right. In no time flat she bounced over the speaker as i was trying to get on her. She made it another 45+ yards before i found her in the scope mid air bouncing above the grass. Had she not been bouncing in the chest high grass i never would have found her in the scope. Squeezed the trigger and my handloaded nosler from the rock river found its way at about 110 yards. Kept on calling hoping the other might come out but no luck. Did have a little doe come out opposite end of the field where i had planned on archery hunting this morning, she was nervous and looking down in the brush. Figure the other yote was probably running through.

First one i have killed with my hand loads and the first one i have called in with this new caller.

Female probably around 30-35 lbs. One down, one less fawn killer.

Awesome!!! Always love seeing some dead yotes

Always enjoy killing yotes. ;)

Hope to try these handloads on several more this winter. Getting very good accuracy with these 55 grain varmageddon out of that rifle.

Been busy and not able to get on here the past couple weeks.

You will have to keep me updated. What rifle are you using? My neighbor has been teaching me to hand load its fun. Little time consuming and I don't have enough time to really sit down and do it but I do enjoy it.

Primary rifle for yotes is a 20" rock river varmint, 223/5.56 wylde.

Been learning as I go with handloading, actually had maybe just a little better accuracy with a different powder(imr 4198) but not the right gas pressure to properly cycle the gun so had to switch to 4895.

Should have had #2 down yesterday. Late morning walk and sit in a ladder stand looking over gut pile and carcass. Dunno if i hit it or not, was wide open in the bottom about 150 yards out. Heard a couple down there this morning when i stepped out with my coffee.

Thanks Shaun. Yeah that accura with that scope is pretty accurate, easily a 200 yard gun for deer.

Hoping to get back out and get after more soon, but with gun season opening this weekend will probably have my 270 in my hands for the remainder.

sounds like you're covered in them William. get all you can. still can't believe we've got a limited duration season for them here in NY. take enough and the remaining that you can't get will scavenge and clean up the woods.

That just sounds crazy to me Dan. Only limitation on them here is night hunting is not allowed.

No sign or sounds of them here lately but sure there are still plenty around. Boy on property behind us claims he is shooting every one he sees now, have heard a LOT of shots on his property, a lot of three rapid shot sequences.

Should have had another this morning with the 270, would make 4 this deer season if i hit it. Think i missed though, got a little too anxious with expectations the yote was heading off our property and took my shot on the moving yote into what looked like a narrow hole in some dead fall brush rather than waiting with hope he would not go that way. Thought it was the last chance on our side with the direction it seemed to be going but as it turned out after i shot he went in a clear lane in the sand on our line as i was racking in another round. Couldn't find it in the scope before it got into more thick crap. Should have had my rock river in my hands.

once the deer season ends it's still season for yotes here in NY. we can hunt them through the winter. a few groups around here run dogs after deer season and get 25 or so each year in this area. there's definitely more but it puts a dent in their numbers.

I could see killing 25 in a year here if I had enough ground, we only have 60 acres though, and most of that is pasture in front of the house that I don't even hunt.

I will do some calling after our deer season ends. With the likely misses I am not gonna make my goal of 6 yotes this deer season, maybe I will get an opportunity at redemption after the deer season ends.
