Rural King crossbows

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into getting my dad a crossbow for this fall so he can get back in the woods with me. He hunted one year with me then our land we hunted got sold so he sold his bow and over the past 3 years I've slowly gotten more land to hunt so I want to get him back at it. I've been thinking a crossbow would be better for him than a compound but I don't want to spend big bucks on a crossbow and he only uses it one season so ive been looking at the Rural King $80.00 ones anyone have any good or bad stories about them? I can't remember the make of them off the top of my head but I'll be going there for work this morning and I'll get the info

I've never seen a new crossbow worth hunting with for under 300.00. You would be better off looking for a used crossbow on Craigslist or at a pawn shop if you can't spend 300.00+ dollars.

My cousin bought one of the $80 recurve style ones for his kids about a year ago. He says for the price it's decent as long as shots are closer. If I remember some of the reviews had the limb tips breaking off, but that is a replaceable part. I spent a little more (about $275) and got a Barnett Recruit compound for my kids and it's been flawless so far.

I get the email ads from rural king with those all the time. Honestly don't think i would try one for hunting. Might be a fun backyard target bow though.

Ok thanks for the info now my next question is any brand better than others?

Kinda get into the ford dodge chevy, and remington winchester savage, ......... All about personal preference and how much you want to spend. Probably some pretty decent entry level bows from several brands in the $300 range and go up from there. I considered the wicked ridge line which our rural king carried before the closest store closed up, they are made by ten point. Heard real good things about excalibur bows too. A lot of good quality brands out there. Personally have a barnett raptor, lucked up on a wal mart clearance deal after seasons ended where they had it marked from $399 to $199 and picked one up.

I'd say Tenpoint makes the best compound while Excalibur makes the best recurve style. Barnett, Parker, Wicked ridge, PSE are all reputable manufacturers. Some thins to consider when buying: 300fps is plenty of speed. Faster is fine, but not needed to kill a deer. The string poundage is generally tough to pull when over 160 so getting a cocking aide is helpful. Having a thumb move up the forearm while shooting can be painful. A crossbow with a safety guard to prevent thumb migration is good to have. Crossbows are heavier than bows, get a sling to carry on and out of the field.
