WOW...Double Droptines!

Recommended Posts

Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined getting trail cams pics of a double droptine buck in Mississippi.  I've never gotten pics of a buck with any droptines before on my home turf.  So...needless to say, I was shocked when I ran my trail cams here in Mississippi and saw this guy.  This is a huge surprise!

This is on a hunting club in Mississippi I'm in with 11 other members.  Seriously doubt anyone is going to let him have another year or 2 if they see him.  The body size of these MS bucks is smaller than most areas of the country.  Fully mature bucks average 185 to 190 on this place.  We weigh them all.  Got some profile views but my best guess is he's 4.5 years old.  Real hard to say on these bucks until after velvet shedding and they fill out their chest and necks.  Cool to know he's out there, especially in an area where I have a number of stands.  One of my bow stands is ~15 yards to his left.

First pics you posted had me thinking 3.5.  Not too sure after the last pic, but would be surprised if he was over 4.5.

Is your stand visible in the background in the first two pics?

No...The camera is facing almost due S.  My stand is ~15 yards E of the camera.

older original post and haven't been around in a while. not sure if Al has hard antler pics but it's extremely deceiving trying to age a buck on the hoof when it's still in velvet late summer. i agree with Al in that it's probably 4.5 yrs old. depth of body front to back is very even typical of full skeletal maturity, with the legs looking not overly long compared to the body like you'd get with 2.5 and 3.5. neck with no swelling or bulk is still fairly low on the chest. by now that thing is probably juiced up and has put on some serious bulk up front, despite not the thick northern deer some of us are used to.  definitely hope he connects and sends teeth out.  i don't think he supplemental feeds year round down there so cementum annuli results should be true to what they are.

Got these pics back in late Oct. about a 1/2 mile N of where I got him in velvet.  Didn't get a good side view pic.  Haven't got him on a cam since then.  Heard the neighbors have pics of him too but they haven't killed him.  He appears to be spending more time on them than us.  The pics I've gotten have been fairly close to our W property line.  His drop tines curve backwards making them appear shorter than they look on pics too.

When I saw you had posted in your thread here I have to admit I figured I would be looking at pics with you behind this deer.  Hope he is still around for you Al.  You have had a great season regardless.  Heck of a deer, probably 20 inches inside and 22+ inch beams as he is right there.

Good luck catching up with him or at least if you don't get him with getting post season pics to see he made it through.
