308 Scope Recommendation

Recommended Posts

It's time for me to upgrade my scope on the 308. I'm trying to find the best scope for 308 for deer hunting and was wondering what you guys would recommend? I'm looking for a scope that has long eye relief, dead-hold BDC, and if possible, lightweight. Any recommendations?

Have a nikon monarch 2.5-10x42 bdc on my LR308, and a prostaff 4-12x40 bdc on my rem 700 varmint sf.  Been very happy with both.

Really boils down to how much you want to spend and on what type deer hunting you will be doing.

Nikon's MONARCH 5 riflescope is one of my favorite scopes. If you look around you can find discounted prices on this discontinued scope. I currently use 2, 1 on a Hill Country .300 Win and one on a Bergara .308. Love em! Dialed in with Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program I can blast soda cans at 600+ yards. For my hunting needs that is plenty. The BDC reticle makes target acquisition quick and easy which is exactly what you need for hunting. The ED glass will blow you away and is the main reason I bought mine.

I'm seeing a lot of people are recommending the Nikon Monarch 5. I did read a couple of blogs regarding that specific scope and in conclusion, it's a good scope. I'll give it a go. Thanks guys! :)

Michael, You won't be disappointed. Check out Natchez Shooter's to see what they have and their prices. The last one I bought from them was one heck of a deal. I hope you'll do a review for us when you get the scope. I promise the ED glass will blow you away and dialing in with Spot On is incredibly accurate. Drop me a note with any questions.

All depends how far you're planning to shoot. I like the Leupold scopes. I went with a VX-1 3-9x40 on my Remington 700 CDL SF chambered in 7mm-08. It was the only scope they had in stock at the time I bought my rifle that was silver to match the barrel. Even though it's a base model Leupold I've been very impressed with it. Extremely clear and I haven't had to touch the crosshairs since the first sight in.

My next rifle will be a 700 Varmint SF .220 Swift and you can bet there will be a high powered Leupold on top!

if you aren't shooting really long distance get a 3-9x40 muzzleloader/shotgun scope. they typically have longer eye relief it seems like.  if you're shooting out there past 400 yards then more magnification might be helpful. shooting farther will get you in a pickle shooting with just elevation in mind and not figuring in wind.
