Potential New Truck

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a truck for a while now and finally spotted one on autotrader that i like.

1998 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 package, 94,000 miles. It's a couple hours away from where i live but only 5 miles from a relatives house.

Here's the link:

What do you guys think? Anybody have one of these silverados? Originally i wanted a mid 90's model but was starting to lean towards the newer style silverados, until i saw this one last night. Also wish it was a 4 dr ext cab cuz its gonna be a pain to have to walk around the truck everytime i need something out of the back seat.

Nice truck, but I'd offer $8,500 or $7,999. Maybe even $7,500. I bought my 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 4 door Extended Cab for $6,700 and it was in excellent shape with only 81,000 miles. Of course...I think I got a $2,000 credit on any vehicle in the lot because they had worked with me on my other vehicle ('87 Chevy Silverado Suburban). So $8,500 might be a good offer. Hope this helps!

Ya it definitely does! I looked on blue book and it valued it at around $8300. I didn't want to go more than a thousand below that because the truck is in great condition for a 98 and i'd feel bad if i paid anything less.

Should be a good solid truck. I have the exact same rig, except mine is white. Same year, same interior, no rust or leaks. I bought mine about a year ago. I paid $5,200 for mine last year, but it had 138,000 miles on it, and the gas gauge doesn't work.

Looks like a sharp truck. I would definately low ball them for the first offer....you can always come up a little bit. They'll probably throw you a counter offer anyway.

It's a nice truck, but a little high on the price. They are tough trucks! Personally I'd opt for a newer one with the 5.3L LS style engine. I'm not a big fan of the Vortec 350. They're good other than the intakes leaking. But the 5.3L has more power, gets better fuel economy and are more reliable. I found a 2001 Silverado 4x4 a year and a half ago for $8000. It had about 70,000 miles.

If you can get them to move down to around $7250 I'd take it.

Yep, I have to agree with Shaun on this topic. I used to own a 89 chevy with a throttle body 350 and jumped up to a 2001 4.8L and I'm just amazed in the power difference. But my cousin has a 97 Chevy with a 350 and it almost has 150,000 miles but the body is starting to rust off but it has been a great truck.

how is the 350 for hauling trailers? I might need it to haul an old 14 foot lund fishing boat or a duck boat this fall. Other than that i'd just have a four wheeler or snowmobile in the bed.

If i find a truck with the 5.3L LS engine i'll drop this truck but it's been tough to find one that has everything i want and within a couple hundred miles of my place. This truck is the closest one to what i've been looking for.

ok sounds good. thanks for helping me out. it seems like the 98 silverado would have plenty of power for what i'd need it to do and i've been hearing from other people too that they're real tough and reliable. but have you heard of anyone that's had one of these trucks with the 350 and wished it had more power?

The 5.3L has the upper hand over the 350 on fuel mileage. And even though the 5.3L is smaller than the 350 (5.7L) it has more power too. The 4.8L is no slouch either, the 4.8L is 270-295hp/305lb-ft torque depending on year and the 5.3L which is a stroked 4.8L has 295-320hp/340lb-ft torque depending on year. The Vortec 350 is 255hp/330lb-ft torque.

I love the LS engines. They're based off the original LS1 that came out in the 1997 Corvettes. Now the new Vette's have an LS9 with 640hp, that's how far they've came. Still have pushrods too, no DOHC required to make horsepower from GM! :D

Too bad you couldn't find a truck like this down there. I always thought vehicles were cheaper in the states, most of the trucks I've looked at are a lot newer and lower miles than the ones you posted.

FYI: 177,415km = 72,958 miles

Sometimes, not very often. But when they hop into a truck with a 5.3L and put the hammer down they usually have a face like this ---> :jaw:

hahaha i know that feeling! i'll have to see if a truck pops up in the near future with the newer engine, or maybe i'll go with the red 2000 silverado. i'm undecided. which is also good because i need to get the money before i make any final decisions on a truck. what did you think of the price on that 2000 silverado? i'll check what blue book thinks

that dealer bought that pickup at an auction for $3,000.00 or less. don't feel bad about working him down some. it's marked up real high so he can give you a hefty trade in price. since you're not trading anything in, i'd start out real lowball, remembering how tough times are.

another thing you can do is go to him, ask for his bottom dollar cash price, and see what he says. in any case, tell him you'll think about it and leave. then go back if you want it. face it, trucks are not real high in demand right now so time is on your side.

that's true. i've also noticed that they're priced lower now than they were a while back. I'll shot him an email or give him a call and see what he's willing to drop down to.
